The Black history knowledge gap is widening – and GOP politicians are making it worse

On the day of the Super Bowl, Matt Gaetz, a Republican member of Congress from Florida, publicly announced that he would not watch one of the most popular sporting events in America. The reason for his boycott? “They’re desecrating America’s national anthem by playing something called the ‘Black national anthem,’” Gaetz explained. The song he criticized is “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was written by James Weldon Johnson and his brother Rosamond Johnson in 1903. For more than a century, this hymn has celebrated the faith, persistence and hope of Black Americans. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was sung at the Super Bowl by Andra Day, after Reba McEntire sang the national anthem. Whether or not Gaetz’s racist antic was the result of ignorance about the song’s legacy, it is clear that there is a knowledge gap between Black and white students on our nation’s racial history. Manchester United have a new number 11 after handing the vacant jersey to summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, a player fans hope will be the club's answer to Erling Haaland. Although number seven is arguably a more significant number in the club's history with greater legendary status, 11 also has a storied past and is beloved by fans. Back through History when shirt s number s were always 1-11 and there were no fixed squad number s like today, the shirt has been worn at United by the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, Busby babe David Pegg, occasionally Denis Law and regularly George Best when he wasn't dressed in seven. Hojlund was made to wait for his United debut after a £72m transfer from Atalanta was completed in early August, owing to an existing pre-season injury he suffered prior to the move. Lakers' LeBron James becomes second player in NBA history to score 38,000 career points

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James elevated to some rarified air on Sunday night. With his point production against the Philadelphia 76ers, James became just the second player in NBA history to score 38,000 career points. The only other player ever to do so is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league's all-time leading scorer.  Heading into the Game against Philadelphia, James needed 11 point s to reach 38,000 and it didn't take him too long to do so. He reached the mark on a jump shot midway through the first quarter.
