International Mother Language Day (February 21st)

Days Of The Year Calendar 2023 - Now Available!

Announced by UNESCO in 1999, International Mother Language Day celebrates cultural diversity and commemorates the “language martyr” students of 1952 Bangladesh. These students are honored by the encouragement of multiculturalism and the promotion of protective measures for endangered languages.

It’s hard to imagine the challenges faced by students who have been ordered to learn in a foreign language, as without linguistic inclusion, there is no equal access to Education. Current International Mother Language Day events include multicultural festivals which promote the hearing of all voices, and display social cohesion, cultural awareness, and tolerance. The unique nuances and subtleties of linguistic communication which connect individuals to culture and personal identity are valued and encouraged.

In the words of Nelson Mandela, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”

Jeremy Doku’s challenge on Alexis Mac Allister was not deemed a high boot by VAR official Stuart Attwell, who denied Liverpool a late penalty vs. Man City. Doku’s studs collided with Mac Allister chest in the penalty area in the 98th minute of Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and Man City. It came in a battle for a bouncing ball, with footage showing Mac Allister touched it first before the Man City substitute’s attempted clearance made contact. The expectation was that VAR would overrule referee Michael Oliver, who waved away initial appeals for a late penalty, but that quickly unravelled. The Black history knowledge gap is widening – and GOP politicians are making it worse

On the day of the Super Bowl, Matt Gaetz, a Republican member of Congress from Florida, publicly announced that he would not watch one of the most popular sporting events in America. The reason for his boycott? “They’re desecrating America’s national anthem by playing something called the ‘Black national anthem,’” Gaetz explained. The song he criticized is “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was written by James Weldon Johnson and his brother Rosamond Johnson in 1903. For more than a century, this hymn has celebrated the faith, persistence and hope of Black Americans. “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was sung at the Super Bowl by Andra Day, after Reba McEntire sang the national anthem.
