The Philadelphia Phillies will host the Washington Nationals for Game one of their divisional series this Monday from Citizens Bank Park.

Nationals Preview & Projected Starter

Washington moved to 49-63 after sweeping Cincinnati. The Nats have been competitive early on this month, and they come into Philly winners of their previous four games. The Washington offense is scoring 3.48 runs per game, while batting .262, with a .319 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 4.96 ERA, with a 1.50 WHIP.

Trevor Williams (5-6, 4.72 ERA, 79 Ks) is set to start for Washington. The eighth-year pitcher was roughed in Queens last week, allowing five runs in four innings to the Metsen route to his sixth loss of the season. Williams posted season-highs in runs allowed and walks against New York last time out, and he’ll look to put that performance behind him. Williams has been solid overall this year from an innings-eating standpoint, but he’s allowed three runs or more in five of his last seven starts, and he’ll face an uphill battle here in Philly.

Nats Player Trends & Props

• Lane Thomas tore Cincy up over the weekend, and after producing multiple runs in all three contests, he leads the Nats in hits (126), with splits of .290/19/65. 

• Joey Meneses has reached base in nine of the last ten Games,  and he’s batting .279, with 60 RBI.

• CJ Abrams crushed a leadoff homer in the Game three win, and after collecting four hits in the contest, he’s posting a line of .260/11/44. 

 

Phillies Preview & Projected Starter

Philadelphia moved to 61-51 after taking two of three from Kansas City. The Phillies regrouped over the weekend after dropping game one to the Royals, and they’ll look to close this home stand strong in division play. The Philly offense is scoring 4.13 runs per game, while batting .254, with a .322 on-base percentage. The pitching staff carries a 3.98 ERA, with a 1.25 WHIP. 

Ranger Suarez (2-5, 4.01 ERA, 64 Ks) will take the mound for Philly. The sixth-year lefty gave up ten hits in Miami last week, but he managed to hold the Marlins to one run through 6.1 innings of work. The outing was a good sign for Suarez, who struggled noticeably last month after performing well in June, and he’ll be looking to avenge a home loss to the Nats here. The Park Ranger allowed five runs thru 5.1 innings in a July 1st start versus Washington, but he earned a win in DC (7 IP, 1 ER) four weeks prior, and he pitched well against them over the years.

Phillies Player Trends & Props 

• Alex Bohm has collected a hit in eight of the previous ten Games,  and he leads Philly in RBI (71), while hitting .294.

• Nick Castellanos homered in two of three matchups with KC,  and he’s posting strong splits of .274/17/67.

• Bryson Stott smashed a three-run shot in the game three victory, and he’s posting team-leads in batting (.302) and hits (125).

• Kyle Schwarber broke his homer-less streak with a Schwarberbomb in Sunday’s win, and he leads the Phillies in home runs (28), with 65 RBI.

• Bryce Harper has doubled in four of the last six Games, and he’s batting .300, with 35 RBI through 79 Games.

• Trea Turner also comes into this matchup with his former squad with some momentum, after coming alive and collecting hits in all three games over the weekend.

 

Corey’s Free Pick

Philadelphia comes into a good spot to keep rolling in the NL Wild Card race, as long as they don’t sleep on this young Nats squad. Washington has played good ball over the past three weeks, and while they present a threat as a divisional opponent, they’ve been overpowered by the Phillies a handful of times this season. Philly’s bats should be able to get to Trevor Williams, and if we can get another solid outing from Ranger Suarez at home, I like the hosts opening this series strong. The Over will be in play, but let’s back Philadelphia for Game one of this NL East series.
